elem 0514 6Finally we have some spring weather and students are enjoying the warmer weather at recess. Our fields and playground area is dry and students are now able to enjoy all parts of the playground. A load of mulch is due to arrive in a week or two so we can freshen up the area around the swings and play structure. Rob Reade and I continue to work on our natural playground area and are grateful to the parents who are helping us with this ongoing project.

Recess time for students is an independent time during their school day to socialize, be creative, and
play cooperatively with their peers in a variety of student created activities/games. Yesterday I was out at recess and during the kindergarten through second grade recess time I saw imaginations being used and groups of students made up some very creative games.

However, in such a non-structured setting and with about 40-70 students during the recess time, students may need assistance from adults with conflict resolution situations. Conflicts and behavior incidents can occur during this time. We continuously monitor recess time. Each area of the playground has an adult supervising and interacting with the students. Some adults lead kickball and other games.

Many teachers take a few minutes when the students come in from recess to debrief with students about recess time so they have a chance to talk about situations. This is an opportunity to teach about solving conflicts, cooperating and getting along with others.\

Did You Know?

Last Wednesday was Administrative Assistants Day. The students and staff gave Angel lots of cards, gifts and hugs! I would like to thank Angel for all her hard work in our front office. Her warm smile greets our students, staff and parents each day. She really is Samuel Morey's Angel!
