We Love to Read Week

March 10, 2014

Last week WES celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday by rocking and reading during We Love to Read week. The celebration began Monday at community meeting where the staff, dressed in Dr. Seuss hats and holding Dr. Seuss books, broke into song with "Gotta Keep Reading," (to the tune "I Gotta Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas), and then the entire school danced and paraded around the gym waving books. In the afternoon, students walked around the grounds of the school on The Foot Book story walk. Tuesday brought "buddy reads," and in art class, each child decorated a reading book bag with fabric paints, sprays and markers. Mr. Acquilano got involved too by planning Dr. Seuss P.E. games to keep the students active.

On Thursday, teachers switched rooms during the read aloud shuffle and read their favorite Dr. Seuss wse 0310145books. Stories like Cat in the Hat, If I Ran the Zoo, and All the Places You'll Go could be heard throughout the building. Dressed in book character costumes, students enjoyed Friday's activities too. The second story walk, The Cat in The Hat was set up around the school for everyone to read. In the afternoon, even the loss of water could not stop our book give-away. Thanks to Irene Otis and Fabienne Stearns, parent volunteers, the books were transported to Samuel Morey where each student choose 2-3 and carried them home with their newly decorated book bags. After choosing their books, we had an all-school read in the SME gymnasium. A huge thank you to the community for donating an array of high quality books, to our staff and students for a great Friday, and to SME for letting us borrow their gymnasium!
