Counselor’s CornerHello again! The beautiful summer is coming to an end, and it is such a pleasure to see our children again. They have all grown and had new experiences. It is great fun to re-connect and hear about their adventures. This summer I was able to take a course at Plymouth and I look forward to sharing my new knowledge to help children succeed at school. School plays a big part in helping children to be successful, but the most important influence is their relationship with you.
I have been thinking more about how to connect with parents and guardians. If something comes up with your child I will do what I can in the moment and then I would like to consult with you about how to proceed. Most of the time these are pretty simple problems like they didn’t get enough sleep, but sometimes they are worried about something big. Working together we can figure out what to do. If you can't come in to school, then I hope we can find time for me to come to you. It is essential that we work together to help the children succeed at school and beyond. I look forward to working with you this year. Best,
Hetty ThomaeThe children often think it is odd that I insist (after they calm down) that the first thing to do when solving a problem is to figure out what the problem is. - What information do you need to know what the problem is?
- How do you figure this out?
- Who can you ask?
- Who is involved in this problem?
- What part of the problem can YOU solve?
- What part of the problem are you in charge of?
- Is it a child sized problem or an adult sized problem?
- Whose problem is it?
- If it isn’t your problem, why are you trying to solve it?
- What exactly is bothering you?
- Are you sad, scared, hurt, or embarrassed?
- Do you feel sorry for someone else, or want to help them?
- Do they want your help? Is there something you can do?
Knowing the answers to these questions can help you to solve the problem, or to know who to ask for help. Hetty Thomae |
